How to Tile Outside Corners

    • 1). Lay all the full tiles that will fit around the area of the outside corner, but aren't touching it (so the space left between the full tiles and the wall is less than a tile width). Measure from the edge of the surrounding tiles to the wall on both sides of the corner. Use your wax pencil to mark the measurements on the tile. Make sure to subtract for the grout lines around the tile (generally an eighth- to a quarter-inch).

    • 2). With your tri-square, draw two straight lines over the marks you make. The lines should run perpendicular to each other from two edges of the tile and meet on the tile face, forming a corner. Neither line should completely cross the tile.

    • 3). Set the tile on your wet saw, with the end of one line facing the blade. Push the tile into the blade slowly, with even pressure, cutting the first line. Stop when it gets to the point where it meets the other line. Pull the tile back off the blade with the blade still on. Turn the blade off only after the tile is completely away from it.

    • 4). Repeat for the other line. When you reach the point where the two lines meet, the cut-out piece should come away from the rest of the tile, leaving you with tile that has a corner cut out of it.

    • 5). Spread tile adhesive into the space where the tile needs to go. Press the tile into place, spacing it correctly with the other tiles. Let it set overnight.

    • 6). Grout the whole area, spreading the grout over the tiles with your grout trowel, pressing it into the lines between the tiles. Let it sit in the lines for a few minutes, then wipe down the surface with a damp sponge to take up the excess grout.
