    Sulfur and Zinc

    • Add sulfur foods to your diet daily to grow your hair longer, like eggs, watercress, kale, cabbage, garlic, onions, asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower.
      Take MSM daily as a supplement. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a natural source of sulfur, which accelerates hair growth.
      Eat foods high in zinc, such as oysters, egg yolks, okra, wheat germ and shrimp. Zinc strengthens your immune system, which stimulates hair growth.

    Protein

      Increase the amount of quality protein foods you eat each day to grow your hair. Add whey or soy protein powder to your diet. These proteins stimulate your hair growth faster than other protein foods because they are digested more efficiently by the body. Soy protein powder stimulates hair growth by up to 15 percent. Use these powders in your soups and sauces or make them into protein shakes.
      Eat eggs each day for increased hair growth. According to The American Egg Board (AEB), the protein in eggs is the standard by which all other sources of protein are measured.
      Dine on wild salmon 3 to 4 days per week. The FDA states that wild salmon has a 20 percent higher protein content and a 20 percent lower fat content than farm-raised salmon.

    Omega-3

      Eat foods high in omega-3 essential fatty acids, like wild salmon, mackerel and tuna. Buy wild salmon fresh, frozen or canned.
      Take 1 to 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil or ground flaxseed daily for a plant source of omega-3. Dietician Andrea Giancoli, MPH, RD, says, "Essential omega-3 fatty acids are needed to support scalp health." A healthy scalp is necessary for hair growth and these sources of omega-3 add shine to your hair.

    Vegetables and Seaweed

      Eat dark green, leafy vegetables along with orange and yellow ones for good beta carotene sources, essential for hair growth. Examples are carrots, carrot juice, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes and apricots.
      Include sea vegetables in your diet, such as seaweed, blue-green algae (spirulina) and kelp. Seaweed is very beneficial to your hair's growth because of the highly absorbable quantities of protein, vitamins and minerals it contains, including iodine. Iodine is crucial for hair growth.
      Crumble the seaweed nori, used to wrap sushi, in your soups and salads. Experiment with other seaweeds like wakame and kombu. Blend powdered spirulina in your smoothies.

    Tips

    • Drink lots of pure water daily--it moisturizes your hair from the inside out and rids the body of toxins. Nine to 10 percent of your hair is made of water. According to the International Sports Medicine Institute, drink half your weight in ounces of water daily. Spread your water intake throughout the day and evening.

      Eliminate all foods from your diet that cause hair loss or stunt your hair growth. These include white sugar, white flour, white processed rice, soft drinks and red meat. Limit your alcohol intake and quit smoking cigarettes.
