How to Put Molding Around a Pocket Door

    • 1). Take a measurement of the upper span of the doorway, horizontally, from inside the two upper corners.

    • 2). Make one pencil mark on the bottom edge of a piece of trim. Measure from that mark to the measurement you took in Step 1, and put a second mark there.

    • 3). Put the trim on your miter saw, with the bottom edge facing back toward the blade and the front side facing up. Set it so one of your two marks is in front of the blade. Swivel the blade to 45 degrees outward, so it's pointing away from both marks. Cut it.

    • 4). Move the trim over so the second mark is in front of the blade. Turn the blade to 45 degrees outward, again facing away from both marks. Make the cut.

    • 5). Hold your trim along the upper edge of the doorway, so the bottom of the piece is lined up on the edge and the mitered ends of the piece angle up off both corners. Secure it with a trim nailer, sinking nails every 10 inches or so along the top and bottom edges of the trim.

    • 6). Measure for one vertical side of the doorway. Miter the upward-facing end of the piece as before, at a 45-degree angle, so it butts tightly to the mitered end of the top piece to form the corner. Cut the downward-facing end at 90 degrees (straight across), so it can butt to the floor.

    • 7). Repeat for the second vertical side of the doorway. Install the vertical sides in the same manner as you did the top piece.
