- 1). Download the current version of iTunes if you do not already have the program on your computer. You can download iTunes from the Apple website. Install iTunes using the default settings.
- 2). Connect your iPod to the computer. If your iPod's battery is dead, the computer might not recognize the device. Allow a few minutes for the iPod to charge before disconnecting and reconnecting the device.
- 3). Open iTunes and back-up existing music on the computer by clicking "Edit" and then clicking "Preferences." Click the "Advanced" tab and click the "Reset" button. Click "OK" to close the window. Click "File," "Library" and then click "Consolidate Library." Click "Consolidate" to accept the alert message.
- 4). Close iTunes and click the "Start" button. Click "Documents," then "Music."
- 5). Right-click the "iTunes" folder and select "Cut." Minimize the window and return to your computer's desktop.
- 6). Right-click an empty space on your computer's desktop and click "Paste."
- 7). Click "Start" and then click "Computer." Double-click the icon labeled "iPod." The contents of your iPod displays in the window. Right-click the "iTunes" folder and select "Copy." Close the window and maximize the window containing the "Music" folder.
- 8). Right-click an empty spot in the folder and select "Paste." The pasting process might take a few minutes. Open iTunes and the contents of your iPod are listed in the Library.
