Amsterdam is full of all-weather attractions and activities, which means that the climate poses little impediment to tourists who come for its arts and culture, entertainment, cuisine and other rain-or-shine features. That said, some visitors would prefer to take their city strolls or canal tours under clear skies, to have a picnic in the Vondelpark or a drink on a sun-bathed cafe terrace, or to sample some of the numerous outdoor cultural festivals the city hosts; others will want to ice skate on the frozen-over canals, see the spectacular ice sculpture festival in the southern city of Roermond, or other season-specific attractions for which cold is a prerequisite.

In all cases, it's wise to expect the unexpected as far as Dutch weather is concerned, as temperatures and precipitation are ultimately quite unpredictable; because of this, even the drier, milder months in Amsterdam warrant an umbrella and/or raincoat in the case of sudden showers, and warm clothes in case the mercury plummets. While some fortunate visitors will never have to unsheathe their umbrellas even in the wetter seasons, others will be relieved to have taken the precautions, even in summer.

BBC Weather offers the latest five-day forecast with all the bells and whistles (temperature and precipitation in addition to UV, humidity, visibility and pressure). You can also track the rain clouds in real-time with the invaluable Buienradar (Rain Radar) web site, which traces the projected course of the rain clouds across the Netherlands over a several-hour time span.

(Do note, however, that some rain clouds are too small to appear on the radar!)
