1. Install the boxes 5 feet from the ground and face the openings south or east.
   
2. Place the houses 150 yards at least from buildings, farms, feedlots, or other areas where there is any house sparrows.
   
3. Make sure that the nest box is hanging from a baffled hanger or on a baffled pole to keep predators away from accessing the house.
   
4. Avoid areas where feral or domestic cats are common.
   
5. To avoid blue bird's territorial disputes, the birdhouses should be placed 150 yards apart.
   However, you may reduce competition between tree swallows and blue birds by placing boxes in pairs, allowing one pair of each kinds to nest in close proximity.
   
6. Face boxes toward shrubs or trees so that young birds can easily leave the nest and fly to a perch.
   
7. Do not place birdhouses on wooden fence posts that are deteriorating or rotten to avoid any ant problems.
   
8. Avoid placing the boxes where chemicals are frequently sprayed.
