Creating A Focal Design Point In A Small Bathroom Or Cloakroom

In the UK, we hold the rather dubious honour of having the smallest average domestic room size of any European nation. This means that when British homes are designed, we tend to sacrifice space in the bathroom to retain as much living and bedroom space as possible. So we may not happy about it, but there is a reason why so many of us end up with smaller bathrooms than we would like.

So then, how best can decorate and design smaller bathrooms so that they represent the style and character we would like, but without feeling cramped or overloaded with fixtures and fittings? One idea that is becoming increasingly popular is the creation of a focal design point for your bathroom, one key area that draws the eye and where you can focus your design efforts, whilst keeping the rest of your bathroom simple and understated.

The basin area is usually the most obvious place in which to create your focal design point, as this is the most high-traffic area of the bathroom. A fitted basin vanity unit is a must, as it will allow you to keep your basin area organised and clear of the assorted bathroom products that tend to accumulate. As a fitted unit it will sit flush against your walls and floor and conceal the plumbing that connects your basin to the water supply, resulting in a more streamlined looking bathroom overall. It will also afford you plenty of counter space upon which to work, as and when you require it. As for the finish of your vanity unit, natural woods are regarded as the most lavish, luxurious choice for bathroom furniture. Dark woods, such as walnut or wenge have a rich, solid, opulent quality that will provide an anchor for your focal design point.

A modern basin, whether incorporated into the vanity unit or a counter top model, is a great opportunity to express yourself. Modern basins come in all shapes and sizes, but the cream of the crop has to be a counter top natural stone basin, with a stylish waterfall fat fed from the a drilled counter top.

Above your basin, an illuminated mirror is a sure-fire way to make your bathroom an instant talking point. Lights and mirrors are classic ways to increase the sensation of space in any small room, so combining these two into a glamorous designer illuminated mirror ticks three boxes at once!

Finally, framing your illuminated mirror with a couple of wall-mounted, narrow cabinets will complete your transformed and revitalised basin area, and ensure that you have ample space for all of your daily essentials and that they always within easy reach. You dont need to include every one of these changes, but a few of them working in conjunction can really make an enormous difference. Have a click around and find out for yourself!
