Ohio Playground Safety Regulations
- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) has created a booklet that offers safety guidelines for public playgrounds. This handbook is implemented by Ohio school districts. Some states make CSPC compliance mandatory, though Ohio doesn't.
- CSPC has conducted research on playground hazards and found that the majority of accidents resulted from children falling off of equipment. CSPC's handbook targets major playground hazards such as potential openings that could entrap a child's head and dangers presented by sharp edges, protrusions and points.
- Ohio had mandatory safety regulations for school playgrounds from 2005 to 2009. This law was created after a young boy named Jarod Bennett was killed by a cafeteria table in 2003. Ohio lawmakers did away with this law in 2009 because it was too costly and too complex for many school districts to effectively carry out.
