How to Change Wireless Providers
- 1). Visit the website of the wireless carrier you'd like to switch to (see Resources). There is usually a "Shop" section of the website where you can look at phones and find the plan that's right for you.
- 2). Set up an account with your new provider and be sure to choose the "Number Portability" option. This will allow you to keep your old phone number. You'll likely have to confirm the number switch with your current provider.
- 3). Cancel your account with your current provider. This will likely occur when you're confirming the number switch to your new provider. If you're still under contract with your old provider, you'll be forced to pay an early-termination fee and the remaining balance of your account.
- 4). Prepare for some "quiet time." A number switch takes a few hours and there may be some time in between when your phone won't ring.
