How to Make Half Model Boats
- 1). Using a photo copier, enlarge your boat schematic to the scale the finished half model boat will be. From this, you can determine the number of boards you will need to sandwich together to create the hull.
- 2). Brush a layer of wood glue on one side of two pine boards. Stack the sticky sides together with edges flush, and clamp. After those boards have dried together about five minutes, repeat the process on one of the paired boards, and a third board.
- 3). Keep repeating the gluing and clamping of boards together until all boards are joined with a flush edge. Allow them to dry for 24 hours, and then remove the clamps.
- 4). Take the drawing, and use the pencil and transfer paper to trace the hull profile on the boards. This will give you an outline to work from to cut the basic shape of the boat.
- 5). Cut along the hull lines you traced on the sandwiched wood, using the band saw or jigsaw.
- 6). Continue to draw and cut, marking the curvature of the hull on the boards from the boat schematic.
- 7). After the basic half boat hull is cut, use the planer and sanding paper to smooth the hull. The back side of the hull should be flat, leaving a half boat from stem to stern. Make certain to smooth any rough areas or edges to prepare for paint.
- 8). Once your half boat is sanded, use acrylic paint and stain to finish the design of the ship. Seal the entire boat with lacquer.
