    CAM Photosynthesis

    • Crassulacean Acid Metabolism photosynthesis is used primarily by cacti and other plants that live in very dry, hot climates. This involves a complicated process by which carbon dioxide is stored in an acidic form. Storing carbon dioxide, to be used later, allows these plants to collect it at night when temperatures are cooler. By not opening receptacles during the daytime hours, the plant protects its own water supply and avoids exposure to the harsh heat.

    Production

    • Plants can respond to harsh conditions by reducing the amount of photosynthesis that takes place. A premium is placed on water retention and avoiding exposure to damaging heat and sunlight. While photosynthesis is necessary for life and growth, the plants can balance this with the dangers of overexposure.

    C4 Photosynthesis

    • Only about one percent of all plant species use C4 photosynthesis, according to the Encyclopedia of Earth. This special ability allows these plants to begin and complete the process of photosynthesis faster. This is advantageous to plants that have only limited windows of exposure to the ingredients needed for photosynthesis to take place. They make up for it by processing it faster when it is available.

    Possible Uses

    • Alternative processes of photosynthesis open up exciting possibilities in the world of biofuel production. Scientists hope to one day boost the yield of plants that are capable of producing ethanol, such as corn and soybeans. By determining what situations cause the plants to use their special abilities, scientists hope to be able to harvest more fuel from the plants. This may lead to these plants being a reliable source of fuel in the future.
