Varieties of White Peaches
- Cultivated since 1875, the Belle of Georgia is one of the older varieties of white peaches raised in the United States. The Belle of Georgia is a large, freestone peach with firm white flesh known for making an excellent dessert. Tropic Snow, introduced in Florida in 1988, is a modern white-fleshed peach variety. This peach grows well in mild winter climates and is known for its excellent flavor. The Stark Early White Giant peach originated in Arkansas in 1949. Harvested in the first half of July, this white-fleshed peach has more of a tart than sweet flavor.
- Stump-of-the-Earth peaches have been grown in New Jersey since 1825. Although not known for being the most attractive peach variety, with a pale green skin, the sweetness of its white flesh makes up for any outward lack in appearance. Also haling from New Jersey, the Redrose variety was introduced in 1940. A hybrid of the J.H. Hale and Delicious varieties, Redrose peaches are harvested in late July to early August and have a slightly acidic flavor. The White Heath Cling is a clingstone variety from Maryland. It has a creamy white, red-blushed skin and a juicy white flesh; this peach is recommended for canning.
- Two of California's older varieties of white-fleshed peaches remain popular today. The first, Nectar, has been cultivated since 1935 and is known as being one of the finest white peach varieties; the other, Strawberry Free, grown since 1959, has a delicious flavor and serves as a benchmark for today's modern varieties. One of the first California white peaches to gain attention, however, was the Babcock variety in 1933. A hybrid of the Strawberry and Peento varieties, Babcock peaches are small to medium-sized fruit with juicy, tangy-sweet, white flesh.
- Polly, which was introduced by the University of Iowa in 1932, is the hardiest of all white peach varieties, able to withstand temperatures of minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit. With a red-blushed white skin and a sweet white flesh, Polly peaches are harvested midseason. Perhaps one of the oddest-shaped, but best-tasting, white-fleshed peaches is the Stark Saturn variety, which is also known as the Donut peach because of its round, flattened appearance. Originally grown in the United States by Stark Brothers Nursery in Missouri, this white peach variety is now available throughout the country.
