    Cap and Hook

    • 1). Create highlights or lowlights on multiple streaks by using a highlighting cap and a small crochet hook. Brush the hair in the style you would normally wear it.

    • 2). Place the highlighting cap on your hair and tie the ends under your chin.

    • 3). Use the small crochet hook to go through the marked holes on the cap.Bring pieces of hair back through the holes with the crochet hook. You can use every marked hole on the cap for all-over heavy highlighting, or do every other hole for less highlighting.

    • 4). Continue around the head, pulling through the desired amount of hair. Brush the hair sticking out of the cap.

    • 5). Mix your color or highlighting cream according to package instructions. Apply the color or cream to the hair and cover with plastic wrap or a pre-purchased plastic cap.

    • 6). Leave the hair color or highlighting cream on until you have achieved the desired results. Rinse out the color or cream thoroughly. Remove the cap and style it as desired.

    Foil Strips

    • 1). Use foil strips and a rat-tail comb to achieve color on multiple strands. First, tear sheets of foil approximately 3 inches wide and long enough to cover the hair length.

    • 2). Pin the hair up on top of the head and secure it with hair clips or pins.

    • 3). Mix your color or highlighting cream according to package instructions.

    • 4). Work from the bottom to the top of the head. Remove one of the hair clips and leave a small layer of hair. Re-clip the remaining hair.

    • 5). Weave through the layer of hair with the rat-tail comb. Place the hair you have gathered on top of the comb in a clip. Using small sections of hair, place the hair on top of one of the foil sheets. Brush on the color or highlighting cream. Fold the outer edges of the foil strip over the color-coated hair; let it hang. Continue this step until you have added color or cream to the desired number of hair strands. Allow the color to process. You may need to sit under a heat dryer.

    • 6). Remove the foil sheets after processing is complete. Rinse the hair thoroughly and style it as desired.
