    Repairing the Floor

    • 1). Remove baseboard molding and pull up the carpet in the area where there is flooring damage. Go to the corner of the room and pull the carpet from the tackstrip which secures it to the floor. Roll over and away from the damaged area while you repair the subfloor.

    • 2). Cut out the damaged subfloor with a circular saw, adjusting the saw to cut through the thickness of the subfloor but not through the joists. Cutting directly over the joists will allow you to pull up the damaged flooring and expose joists. According to OnlineTips.org, the joists are located where the nails are, since that is where the subfloor was attached to the joists. Remove the cut subfloor when you have cut around it.

    • 3). Measure the hole with a measuring tape and cut a new piece of subfloor material so it fits snugly in the opening. Screw the new subfloor to the joists.

    Re-Installing Carpet

    • 1). Roll the carpet back where you originally removed it.

    • 2). Rent a kneekicker from a utility rental location to hook the carpet back onto the tackstrip. Place the teethed portion of the tool onto the carpet, one inch away from the wall. Kick the padded end of the tool with your knee to hook the carpet back to the strip.

    • 3). Replace any baseboard molding.
