    Significance

    • The creation of aluminum sheeting is a highly important process, not only because the metal is converted into more a practical material, its properties are also enhanced. Among the properties boasted by aluminum sheeting are flexibility, ductility and high resistance, making it useful in various applications, both simple and complex.

    Grades

    • Sheets of aluminum are graded depending on their strength, thickness and formability. The common aluminum grades for aluminum sheet metal are: 1100-H14, 3003-H14, 5052-H32 and 6061-T6. Grade 1100-H14 has high chemical and water resistance, and is ductile enough for welding and deep drawing purposes. The 3003-H14 grade has greater strength and is also corrosion resistant. Grades 5052-H32 and 6061-T6 are stronger and more durable, but they lose a part of their strength during welding.

    Types

    • Aluminum sheeting is created through several methods including deep drawing, cutting, perforating and spinning. In deep drawing, a part of the aluminum sheet is formed to create depth. Cutting uses tin snips and other metal cutting equipment to slice through the metal and create precision-designed patterns. Perforating is done to transform aluminum sheets into surface cutting tools. Spinning requires the sheet to go through a rotating mandrel in order to be flattened and made into axis-symmetric parts.

    Equipment

    • Various tools are used in aluminum sheeting, depending on the type of sheeting to be created. Equipment used in such activities includes laser and plasma torches, which emit high temperature heat in order to generate precision design. Fasteners such as rivets and sheet metal screws are used to keep the workpiece in place while sheeting is done. Computer numerical control (CNC) equipment is also used in sheeting aluminum pieces.

    Application

    • Aluminum sheeting is commonly used in creating various metalworks including aluminum furniture, jewelry and stampings. Other aluminum sheets are used in electrical wiring due to their ductility and ability to carry significant amounts of electricity, similar to copper wires.
