How to Successfully Hunt a Deer

    • 1). Scout the area you will be hunting in advance. Speaking with local experts can help inexperienced hunters determine areas which have a high level of traffic, while physically scouting the area allows you to look for signs of deer, such as paths in the woods and droppings, which indicate a commonly-used path for deer.

    • 2). Position yourself downwind from a prime location, at the ideal range for your weapon. Bow hunters want to be approximately 20 yards from the path, while rifle hunters desire a greater distance, closer to 50 yards.

    • 3). Use a tree stand if one is at your disposal. By elevating yourself above the ground, you decrease the chances of the deer being aware of your presence before you can pull the trigger. Always wear a safety belt when in the elevated blind. Stands can range from permanent structures, placed in high-traffic areas, to portable blinds which the hunter carries into the field and hangs in a tree. The safety belt is worn by the hunter, and attaches them to the blind, preventing falls should focus or balance be lost.

    • 4). Wait in the tree while remaining as still as possible. As waits can take a long time, it helps to bring a bag lunch along to eat. Some hunters also elect to bring a book to read to help pass the time. However, you must remain as still as possible and remain alert for signs of a deer.

    • 5). Remain relaxed while waiting, and do not react to every sound you hear. The more you move, the more likely you are to make a noise or motion, which allows the deer to detect you.

    • 6). Aim for the deer's chest. This will maximize your odds of scoring a kill shot.

    • 7). Allow the animal to move off without pursuing it for at least 15 minutes. Monitor the direction it goes so you can find it if it moves out of view. Look for signs of its path such as kicked up debris or a trail of blood. Injured deer will continue to flee if pursued. However, if left to leave without pursuit, the deer is more likely to get out of sight and lie down to rest, as it is weakened, minimizing the distance you have to walk to retrieve it.
