Black Bear Hunting in Southeast Alaska
- All hunters must be licensed to harvest black bear in Alaska. Non-resident hunters must also buy a locking tag and attach the tag to a bear immediately after it's killed.
- Alaska is divided into 26 game management units designed to establish specific, locally appropriate regulations. Southeastern Alaska makes up units 8, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, and 19. However, units 8 and 10 do not offer black bears to hunt.
- Game management units 9, 18, and 19 have a year-round open season. For other units, see up to date Department of Fish and Game regulations.
- After harvesting a bear, you must take the hide, with claws and proof of sex attached, and skull to a sealing officer who will record the information on the site of the kill as well as the bear itself.
- Alaska allows hunter to bait for black bears. Register your plans with the Department of Fish and Game and post signs warning of bear bait in the area.
