How to Fill a Carport Floor to Make It Level

    • 1). Insert a wooden stake into the ground at each corner of the carport using a hammer. Ensure that each stake is inserted to the same depth by measuring the exposed portion using a tape measure.

    • 2). Measure up two to three inches from the bottom of each stake and draw a line on each one using a pencil. Tie a string around one stake and then wrap it around each of the other three until you reach the starting point. Cut the string from the roll and tie it securely to the first stake. Make sure the string sits on top of the pencil line on each stake.

    • 3). Hang a string level in the center of one side of the square string and examine it to see if the air bubble is in the center. If not, adjust the string up or down until it is level. Repeat the process on all remaining sides to level them as well.

    • 4). Fill a wheelbarrow with top soil or use gravel, which provides better drainage and traction for vehicles. Push the wheelbarrow to the carport and use a shovel to distribute it evenly until the material rises to the bottom of the strings. Rake the top of the material using a bow rake to further even it out.

    • 5). Don protective eye wear and place a soil compactor on top of the area and turn it on. Push the compactor over the entire carport floor at least twice to pack the material down tightly.

    • 6). Pull up the wooden stakes and string and discard them.
