Interior windows would look pretty odd and boring if it weren't for decorative trim that brings them to life. Curtains, drapes and blinds prevent the quickest route to interior window trimming, but the potential for creating window trimming goes beyond the traditional. Get creative and make your windows really say something about the house or your personality. - One way to make a window more than just a pane of glass that looks out onto the yard is to insert a window seat. The window seat provides not just an opportunity for sitting comfortably while you stare out the window, but the chance to increase the storage space in your home by making the window seat a hinged bench into which you can place items. It can also take the form of a window bench that doubles as hidden shelving, according to the book, "1,001 Ideas for Trimwork."
- Windows are the perfect spot to showcase your houseplants. Add a little style by suspending the shelves from a rope tied to a wood pole hanging on wooden brackets. The dangling shelves that receive direct sunlight are a prime spot for placement of plants containers. You can increase the style factor by choosing creative containers for your plants.
- Valances are always a stylish trim idea for windows, but triangular shaped valances provide even more sizzle. The downward triangular points of the valance can then be either left alone or you can attach tassels as an accent.
- Swags offers a taste of sophistication when it comes to window trims, but they work best when hung from a long window inside a room with a high ceiling, according to "The Complete Home Decorating Book." A swag hangs high up over the window and gently curves down to give it that traditional classicism. You can add the accent of a rope trim to provide more luxuriousness.
- If you want your window to create a glittery, shimmering effect, hang the kind of post from which you would hang curtains and attach a piece of twine or string to which you have glued CDs. The light bouncing off the bright sides of the CDs, DVDs or those old AOL mailers will produce a constant light show inside your room.
- Create a trompe l'oeil effect by gluing a scene onto your window that provides a view that is hardly what is offered by the reality outside your house. If you live in a rural area and dream of the big city, glue a picture of the Manhattan skyline. Likewise, a Manhattan apartment could feature a window that seems to provide a view of a Hawaiian beach or a snow-capped mountain of the Pacific Northwest.
