    • 1). Put on your gloves to protect your hands from pests. Trim away the excess limbs at the top of the plant. Using the shears, cut away at anything above 12 inches. This will help keep the plant tight and orderly; ready for the blooms to pop through. Trim at 1 inch above a new bud, to protect the bud from stress.

    • 2). Prune back limbs that are growing out of the sides of the plant. Since the hydrangea is a flowing bush, the limbs should all grow in the same direction. Cutting these branches off should be performed periodically as the plant grows taller and wider.

    • 3). Cut away any branches that have been damaged by insects or high winds. This needs to be done whenever you see a break or spotting upon the branch. A jagged tear can lead to decay and attract worms and/or beetles. The damaged limbs should never be neglected for this reason.

    • 4). Cut the inner branches of clustered areas to even the appearance of the bush. The hydrangea should be symmetrical, with level amounts of foliage and blooms throughout.
