How to Layout a Garage
- 1). List any activities that will take place in the garage, and choose a spot where each will be carried out. For example, some garages include a workbench for woodworking projects, as well as a potting bench for the care of house plants.
- 2). Create activity centers along the walls of the garage. This will leave the middle of the garage free for a car or big projects that need space.
- 3). Determine what will be stored in the garage. This includes deciding which items will be kept in cabinets and which ones will be hung. Hanging large items such as bicycles will free up more floor space. Be sure to mount hangers on wall or ceiling studs for sturdiness.
- 4). Maximize storage space by using cabinets large and sturdy enough to support a counter, which can be used for work space. Include lockable cabinets to help keep power tools and chemicals away from children.
- 5). Choose flooring suited for the activities that will take place in the garage. Although concrete flooring is durable and less expensive than other options, it's easily stained by oil, rust and other materials. Epoxy garage floors are stain-resistant and can be wiped clean.
- 6). Make a lighting plan. Determine whether task lighting will be needed for things such as woodworking. Ceiling-mounted fluorescent lights are bright and a viable option in such cases.
