Recently, I was invited to speak at a skincare industry event and I decided that I would share the story of the dirty drain.
I was amazed at the feedback that I got from this story, so I thought I should share it here as well.
You may wonder what a dirty drain has to do with skincare.
I promise you, it's quite a bit.
The story starts when my husband and I got married just over 3 years ago.
At the same time, we also moved into a brand new house.
We were happy, we were newlyweds and we had a nice new house.
We thought that since the house was new, there would be little maintenance required, at least, for the first few months.
Weren't we surprised when our shower drain clogged right up within a couple of months.
At first, my husband blamed the builder, but it soon became evident that we had clogged our drain to the point where it wouldn't drain at all.
My husband cleaned it and the following month he cleaned it again, and the next month, and the next month, etc.
We followed this lovely routine for 2 years.
He blamed me for the hair he found, and I blamed him for the scum that was forming all over our shower and in the drain.
Then, I found a lovely skincare line that contains no animal products.
I asked my husband to try the body scrub, shampoo, and conditioner.
At first he refused, saying that there was no way that plant-based products were going to get him clean (he's a truck mechanic).
Eventually, I convinced him, and to his surprise, these pure botanical products were getting him cleaner than his original brands of choice and he was using less than before! But the best news is that since we switched to a brand that uses zero animal products, he has not had to clean the drain once in the past year! The lesson here? Well, if it's clogging your drain, it's also clogging your skin.
