In the current financial climate many moms have decided it's time to return to school. This includes single moms on one income. But with money so tight how are all the people affording the costs of tuition and books? Government grants are picking up the slack, paying the bills, and allowing moms like you to go to school even though they are sole parents.

Are you considered a low income household? By filling out a FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, you may qualify for a Pell grant. This type of financial aid pays for your educational expenses and if there is any money left over you will receive a check or refund from your school. you can also get scholarships for mothers.

Unlike loans, a grant or scholarship is yours to keep forever. Loans are just more debt, after graduation you have to start paying them back, and if you are already broke you may not be able to afford the payments. Grants are definitely the way to go to school if you qualify for them. It's simple to qualify too, usually you just answer questions based on income and educational history. There are tons and tons of grants and scholarships out there, you just have to find them. After filling out your FAFSA, check with your school's financial aid office and see if they have any additional grants you could apply for. The internet can also be a great resource for financial aid. Do a simple search and see what pops up. Try using key words and phrases such as "single mom grant", "grants for women", or "low income grants". When applying for assistance found online beware of any companies asking for money. You should never have to pay to apply for monetary educational assistance.

With the economy in the state it is, now is the time for singe moms to rise up and get a degree. An education will allow you to make more money and provide extras for your children. All you need is a grant or a scholarship with scholarships for mothers and you are on your way to getting a degree.
