Information on Different Kinds of Online Homeschooling
- Some states offer free public school online to eligible students. The HSLDA does not consider online public schools to be homeschooling, even though the student completes all his work at home. Online public schools still require that the state dictate the curriculum and that the student submit to state testing at the same time as students in traditional public schools. Students of online public schools are also held to the same attendance requirements as traditional school children. Online public schools require enrollment with the state including proof of residency and shot records.
- Online private schools, much like online public schools, dictate the entire curriculum of the student. Although the student may still have to take standardized tests, the tests are scheduled depending on the schedule of the student, and not the local school district. Online private schools often cost much more than traditional homeschooling. The HSLDA and some homeschooling groups will consider the online private school as homeschooling for enrollment in their programs.
- Parents may enroll their students in a combination of homeschool courses offered by private institutions. These courses are often the same as those taken by a student enrolled in online private school, but do not require the student to enroll in the full private program. Certain providers of online public school also offer individual courses for sale to homeschooling families. Enrolling the student in individual online homeschool courses is a valid option for parents interested in a homeschool option without the requirement of teaching the course on their own. Students can choose from a wide range of options at many different online schools to create a well-rounded curriculum.
- Some homeschool curricula offer online enrichment courses. These courses often cover the same topics found in the curriculum books purchased for the homeschool, but include more depth and offer additional help to students who struggle. These courses are often cheaper than other online options but a student may feel lost if the matching curriculum is not taught in the home or at a homeschool cooperative.
