How to Build a Raised Firepit
- 1). Dig a circular hole in the dirt 12 inches deep and 5 feet around. Shovel in 4 inches of gravel, then level it out with a rake. Shovel in 4 inches of sand, and level with the rake. Pack the terrain firmly with the tamper.
- 2). Place a row of landscaping blocks tightly together in a circle on top of the packed sand. Use a carpenter's level to make sure the first row is level. If the first row is uneven, the entire project will be uneven.
- 3). Place landscaping blocks on top of the bottom row to start your second row. Place each block directly in the middle of two blocks below it, so the center of the top block is directly above the joint in the first row. Finish the entire second row with this pattern in mind.
- 4). Shovel some more sand into the fire pit, so the sand level rises to the middle of the blocks in the second row. Continue building the pit until it has four to five rows of landscaping blocks.
- 5). Shovel about an inch of the remaining gravel around the bottom of the outside of the fire pit to reinforce the wall.
