How to Send & Pick Up a Package From the Post Office

    Send Packages

    • 1). Fill out the package label with your address and the recipient's address. Use a black permanent marker and fill out the package label in the same manner as you would an envelope.

    • 2). Bring the package to the post office. Inform the postal service worker that you need to ship the package. The postal worker will type the recipient's zip code in the computer.

    • 3). Select the shipment type you want. Once the zip code is written in the computer, a list of shipment times will display on the screen in front of you. There are options for overnight delivery, two to three days, three to five and five to seven days.

    • 4). Select any special delivery instructions. Options offered that ensure safe delivery include confirmation, signature requirement on delivery, tracking slip and a return delivery card. You can also add package insurance in case any item is lost or damaged during shipping.

    • 5). Pay for your package to ship. You can pay by cash or credit card. The postal service worker will give you a receipt with your services, total and the estimated delivery date.

    Pick Up Packages

    • 1). Retrieve the package slip from your mailbox. The slip will be light orange or yellow in color and state your name on it.

    • 2). Look at the date listed after "Pick up on or after" Typically you need to wait at least 24 hours before you can pick up the package from the post office. Wait until the date listed before you go to pick up your package.

    • 3). Bring the package slip to the post office and give it to the postal service worker. The postal worker may ask for your ID to verify you are the recipient of the package. The postal worker will than take the slip and bring out your package.
