When I play games on my iPhone 4, I need them to be pick up and go.  They need to be simple, quick to get into, and quick to put down.  I made the mistake of buying SimCity and The Sims, not because they're bad games, but for the fact that they're too involved.  I usually have short windows to squeeze in game play; I rarely have time to sit down and saturate myself.

Luckily, Street Fighter 4 can be enjoyed as a quick-play experience and I'm pretty much the biggest fan of the series.  Nothing's better than playing Street Fighter, while backed up three groups on a par five.

The Street Fighter franchise has been at the top of my list, since I played Champion Edition in the arcade, in the early 90's.  When it was first released, I was stoked.  The graphics were amazing, the speed was crazy, and people would "Ooo," and "Ahh," at my sick moves and combos.  I was in heaven.

Therefore, when Street Fighter 4 was released for the iPhone I needed to have it, even if it stunk.  I was so willing to take the gamble that I bought it at the full price of ten dollars.  I was skeptical that a touch screen phone could be used for fighting games.  I expected an inability to feel where my player was on the on the screen, like I can with a joystick or d-pad, but I bought it anyway.

To my surprise, Capcom pulled it off, and most importantly, they were able to stay true to the Street Fighter franchise.  Its not perfect, but I see it as a perfectly acceptable next step to the saga.  Even for a diehard gamer, like myself, I can truly say I'm a fan.

But how are you supposed to fight, without a d-pad?  For those of us who really play Street Fighter, we laugh at the one-button super nub masher controls that consoles have employed to make the game 'easier,' which is exactly what the iPhone provides.  How do you pull off special moves, with just one button?

Capcom knew an on-screen d-pad would not work out so well, so they had to create a special move shortcut, which they named the SP button.  Its simple and it makes SF easier than it should be, but its necessary if you want full character functionality.  Build up your power meter, by landing punches and throwing blocks, in turn enabling the SP button for your special moves.

Gamers are given the option to turn the SP button off, if they desire, to keep pure to the original franchise.  But for me, its always on, because I find it impossible to fight without it.  As for the auto-block feature, I suggest that you never use it; it's more of a hindrance than anything.

While I am completely satisfied with Street Fighter 4, it's not without it's issues.  The most glaring weakness is its graphics.  I also find the game useless, due to the lag, if you're playing on a 3Gs.  The roster is lacking, although characters are added with each major upgrade.  Get ready to pull out your pocket book though, if you're looking for costume upgrades; they're not included.

So, do I recommend the iPhone version of Street Fighter?  If you have an iPhone 4, absolutely!  The game is fast, addictive, and it's easy to pick up and put down, when time is constrained.  But, if you have an iPhone 3Gs, I recommend that you stay away, even with its 99 cent price.
