How to Make Homemade Personalized Wooden Signs

    • 1). Cut a piece of smooth wood to the size you need for your sign. Pine, oak and birch work well for signs because their light color makes it easy to cover the wood with paint. Sand all of the edges so that there are no splinters or rough edges.

    • 2). Paint the entire front surface of the wood with an all-weather sealant. Allow this to dry completely. Turn the wood over and apply the all-weather sealant to the back and sides. Allow it to dry.

    • 3). Drill two holes, one in the top right corner and one in the top left corner.

    • 4). Hold your letter stencils firmly over the wood. Paint your sign with whatever phrase you have selected using craft paint. Allow the letters to dry and then add a second coat if the first did not cover the wood grain well. Paint the all-weather sealant all over the front of the sign, sealing the craft paint in so that it does not wash off in the rain.

    • 5). Cut a piece of rope or chain to your desired hanging length. Thread it through the front of the sign. If using rope, tie a knot so it cannot come back out. If you are using a chain, attach a binding knob.
