What Is in Bagged Spring Mix Salads?
- Lettuce is usually grown to be sold as heads or in large bunches. Spring greens are harvested long before maturity when the leaves are small and tender, and commonly sold in plastic bags or boxes. Spring mix, also referred to as mesclun, is a blend of several types of baby lettuce and other greens.
- Most spring mix blends are dominated by several kinds of lettuce. Typical varieties include green and red oak leaf, red and green romaine, cos and lolla rossa.
- Other types of leafy greens and crunchy vegetables are often found in the mixes as well. Baby spinach, Swiss chard, endive, radicchio, mustard greens, frisee and arugula are among the most popular. These additional ingredients can add flavor, texture and nutrition to the salad mix.
