The cost for attending a public four-year university averaged around $7,000 during the 2009-10 school year. Private universities averaged as high as $26,000 during the same period. Student athletes, such as female golfers, can be hard pressed to find a part-time job to fit into their busy schedules. As a result they may have to rely heavily on athletic-based scholarships. - Developed in 1901, the Women's Western Golf Association sponsors various golf tournaments and represents more than 50,000 women in the United States. The organization offers a scholarship each year that provides $2,000 annually for four years. Qualifications for the scholarship include being a college-bound high school senior and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. Students must also provide a statement regarding their family's economic situation, as well as an explanation of their involvement with golf. The scholarship can be used for educational costs, such as fees for housing and tuition.
