Owl Craft for Toddlers
- The finished puppet is just as entertaining as the crafting itself. Paper bag puppets are inexpensive and uncomplicated to make. Let your toddler decorate the folded bottom of an empty paper lunch bag using markers and crayons. Add real feathers or feathers made from construction paper. Create sock puppets by decorating an old sock to look like an owl. Put your hand into the toe of the sock and control the owl mouth with your fingers.
- Use a piece of construction paper or a paper plate to create an owl mask with your toddler. For a paper plate mask, cut holes for the eyes in the plate and then let your toddler express her creativity, adding a beak and tufts of feathers for ears. Use crayons or construction paper to add details to the plate. Attach string to the sides of the plate to hold the mask on. Using construction paper, make an owl head shape. Decorate the face as desired, cutting holes for your toddler’s eyes. Attach the owl mask to a craft stick or dowel rod and hold it front of the face.
- Let your child express his individual creativity by creating an owl picture. Draw pictures of owls in their natural environment or a fanciful land. Use your child’s favorite drawing medium, such as crayons and markers, or opt for finger paint to paint the picture. Help your toddler with scissors and cut out shapes from construction paper to create the picture. Glue the cutout shapes onto a larger piece of construction paper to secure it. For younger toddlers, offer your child coloring pages of an owl. Once they are colored, cut out a picture frame shape from construction paper and attach it to the outside of the picture.
- Use items from inside and outside your home to create models of an owl. Pine cones, for example, are the same general shape of an owl. Use acorn caps for the eyes, cut out a beak from construction paper and use leaves for the feathers. For a fuzzy owl, cover the pine cone with cotton and add lifelike wings using real feathers. Add feather tufts on top using real feathers or pieces of construction paper. Use an old CD or DVD to create the body of an owl. Paint the surface of the CD using acrylic paints and add wings, eyes and beak using construction paper.
