How to Sew Window Shades

    • 1). Determine the placement of your shades. Find the spot in the window frame where you want them to hang. Measure that point in the window to determine the final dimensions of your shades.

    • 2). Cut your fabric. Add a half inch to each side of your measurements for seam allowances. Cut two identically sized pieces of fabric for the shade. This will give you a double-sided shade that will look attractive when it is up or down. Consider using contrasting fabrics for style.

    • 3). Lay one piece of fabric on a flat surface with the right side facing up. Lay the other piece of fabric on top, right side facing down. Pin along all four edges of the fabric. At the top of the fabric, place pins approximately two inches down on both sides. You will not sew this section together, as this will be where the curtain rod is inserted into the shades.

    • 4). Sew along all four sides, leaving the two inch opening at the top, and leaving an additional two inch gap across the middle of the top to turn the curtain right side out. Machine backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam. Cut the fabric close to each corner seam to help make the corners crisp when the shade is turned right side out.

    • 5). Turn the shade right side out through the opening on the top seam. Use the corner turning tool to push each corner of the fabric out, taking care not to rip the seams. Iron all seams flat. Sew the gap at the top of the curtain shut with a needle and thread.
