How to Inlay Wood in Soil

104 5
    • 1). Place the wood pieces on the ground where you plan to inlay them. Take your time when doing this. Make sure you have them where you want them.

    • 2). Place stakes on each side of the wood and at each end. Tie strings to the stakes to create an outline of the wood. Carefully remove the wood and place it off to the side for now.

    • 3). Excavate the ground inside the string with a shovel for larger areas or a hand spade for smaller areas. Dig the hole as deep as you want the wood to rest in the ground.

    • 4). Place the wood in the hole. If it does not rest deeply enough, remove the wood and dig the area deeper. If you dug too deep, add dirt back into the hole.

    • 5). Fill in gaps between the wood and the wall of the hole with dirt and pack the dirt into the hole with a tamper to secure the wood.
