How to Wire a Quad Wire Telephone Jack
- 1). Open the telephone interface box or Network Interface Device (NID) outside your house. The NID is typically mounted on a wall nearest to where the telephone wires run from the utility post into your house. Unplug the modular connector inside in order to disconnect the main telephone line and prevent any low-voltage shock while you're working on the phone line.
- 2). Pull the telephone cable gently from the outlet box on the wall. Strip off 4 inches
from the cable's outer covering using a pair of diagonal pliers, but do not nick or damage any of the inner wires. - 3). Strip off 1/2 inch of insulation from each of the four wires. Loosen the terminal screws on the RJ-14 telephone jack and wrap each wire clockwise around the terminal screw that has same color of wire attached to it. Tighten each screw.
- 4). Screw the faceplate onto the outlet box on the wall using a Phillips-head or slotted
screwdriver. Reconnect the main telephone line by plugging the modular connector
into its jack at telephone interface box or NID outside your house. Plug a two-line phone into the RJ-14 jack, press line 1 on the phone and listen for a dial tone. Press line 2 on the phone and listen for a dial tone.
