The first modern Mother's Day celebration dates back to 1910. Whether children today choose to honor mom with a hug and a kiss, breakfast in bed, chores done without her asking or offering her flowers and gifts, numerous ways are available to show mom they care. If creating a bulletin board at church or in school, various ideas and materials are accessible. Encourage children to participate in the building of the project while taking the opportunity to express mom's intrinsic value to society. - The "God Loves Mother's Day" bulletin board utilizes various colorful flowers and Bible verses reflective of moms, such as Psalm 139:13 and Exodus 20:12. To create this board, cover the background in a spring color such as lavender, pink, yellow or rose. Affix a dark purple border and use purple construction paper to cut out the phrase "Happy Mother's Day!" Next, use white doilies and cut out the same phrase with the letters a size smaller. After gluing the two together, a purple trim should be visible from behind. Affix the phrase in the center of the board. Make multiple copies of a giant pink rose and surround and glue around the perimeter. Attach a picture of a bouquet of tulips or other spring flowers to each of the four corners, outside the roses. Stagger the two bible verses in individual oval sections under the words "Happy" and "Mother's."
- "Spring Flowers Honor Mother's Day" is a brightly colored board that honors springtime colors and loving mom. To begin, line the back of the board with lilac paper and place large white doilies along the edges. Next, lay atop the doilies a dark purple trim approximately one third the width of the doily. Crepe paper, card stock, construction paper or board trim found in a teacher's supply store all work for this last step. Continue by cutting out the words "Happy Mother's Day" and affixing to the top center of the board with either glue, tape or a stapler. Paste copies of big spring bouquets to the right and left of the phrase at the bottom. Finally, attach a large colorful flower such as a tulip, rose or orchid to every corner.
- There's no better way to celebrate Mother's Day than by creating a board reflective of every mom's love for her children. The "Moms and Kids" board is easy to make, can involve an entire class and requires few materials. A red border for the trim, such as crepe paper or card stock or a teacher supply store edging, is necessary as well as a large quantity of red and pink construction paper. Heavy white paper is also required. Prior to starting this project instruct each child to bring a picture from home of him with his mom. An alternative to this is to use a Polaroid camera in the classroom and take individual pictures of all kids. Hand out a piece of red construction paper to all kids and tell them to cut out a large heart. At the top write the phrase, "I love MOM!" and then glue their photos underneath. Cover the background of the bulletin board in pink paper and secure. Use white paper to cut out the phrase "Happy Mother's Day" and center the lettering. Inform children to attach their hearts along the sides, top and bottom.
