Complex Cerebral Coffee Shop Conversations in Kailua, Hawaii - Case Study Considered

103 5
Have you ever heard the quote that stupid folks discuss stupid things, smart folks talk about events, and brilliant folks more often than not have intellectual discourse about concepts? Well, not long ago, I was sunning it up in Hawaii, no not Maui or Waikiki or any of the touristy spots, just kicking back having some fun sipping on my frappachino in the sun.
I was staying in Kailua Hawaii.
After considering this famous line of reasoning and wisdom, I decided to put it to the test.
Now then below are the types of conversations I had while sitting on the Starbucks Patio there.
Believe it or not, I turned my visit into a case study of local coffee shop conversations, and how it was indeed possible to engage passersby and locals in rather complex topics.
Kailua, Hawaii is a town where the locals kick-back and people retire on perpetual vacation.
Many folks visit and rent a home for the week and vacation there.
It's very popular with tourists who live in colder climates.
You'd think that there wouldn't be any really intellectually advanced minds ready to rip and roar into a heavy duty complex cerebral conversation.
Not so, let me explain.
While I was there, I purposely maneuvered the conversations from; "nice weather isn't it?" to a more meaningful and intellectual topic, using various diplomatic techniques and reinforcing positive psychology.
Indeed, I must had intellectual conversations and talked to well over 50 people over my entire 10-days stay in Kailua and had some very meaningful conversations? I'd like to share with you the topics of that first week; I had in depth conversations and dialogues about:
  • The Newspaper Industry on the island,
  • Paving Business in MT,
  • Health Care Reform, Patents and Aviation Design,
  • Cookie Business,
  • Palm Desert Real Estate,
  • Energy and Geo Thermal Potential,
  • Hawaiian Airline Financial Issue,
  • Nightlife and Music Bands,
  • Kailua Real Estate,
  • Painting Helicopters at the USMC Base,
  • Construction,
  • Education,
  • Writing,
  • Online Websites and Blogs,
  • Tour Packages Business,
  • Nursing Jobs,
  • Military Pilots in the South Pacific,
  • IT text books,
  • President Obama's visits - Golfing Buddy from younger days and drug issues,
  • Oil well drilling in Canada,
  • Used Books and literacy issues in Hawaii,
  • Native Hawaiians having their own government and land.
Amazingly enough, I gave my own mind a workout discussing these heavy duty subjects which goes to show you that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, or an area by its relative ambiance at first glance.
Kailua Hawaii, has beauty, awesome beaches, great people, and a heck of a lot of talented, brilliant, and wise individuals.
Even the President vacations there, and is considered a local, at least once upon a time.
Generally meeting people by chance and then allow them to pick the topics, whether I am on an airplane, at the airport, in a grocery store line, at a conference, at the club house, or just sitting in a coffee shop.
You'd be surprised the information you learn.
Excited about the many different perspectives people have on politics, business, religion, economics, industry, global conflict, education, and how to fix the world - and if you will really listen, you will be amazed at all you learn.
Part of the problem right now is that our society has become far too divided, when in reality there are so many things we agree upon.
There is so much common ground, but you'll never know it until you expand your horizons and listen.
Even better, as your gain report you will find many folks listening to what you have to say, thus, they will learn from you, and you've not only gained a new friend, you've done your part to bridge that gap.
In conclusion, I can say this, my experiment in intellectually challenging topics, propelled an unexpected discovery.
And that is even in a sleepy vacation town, there is complex thoughts brewing in the minds of the locals, at their local coffee shops.
It is this very truth which might assist you in repeating this experiment in your own town or perhaps a vacation location somewhere in your travels.
Try it out, and if you ever do get to Kailua Hawaii, you'll know just where to go to satisfy your intellection needs.
Please consider all this.
