How to Cover Tiles on a Bar
- 1). Dull the surface of the bar with a vibrating sander to remove any grime or gloss. Wipe away the dust.
- 2). Measure one long edge of the bar. Find and mark the middle. Do the same along the other long side. Draw a line across the middle of the bar, connecting the two middle marks on the two long edges, using your pencil and carpenter's square.
- 3). Spread mortar onto the surface with a notched trowel, from the middle line out to the end in one direction.
- 4). Press ceramic bullnose tiles along the front edge of the counter, starting at the middle line and working out to the side. Set the tiles so the finished edges face forward. Set spacers between the tiles as you lay them. Continue all around the perimeter of the bar on one side of the middle line.
- 5). Press regular ceramic tiles behind the first row of bullnose tiles, starting at the middle line and working to the side as before. Put spacers between the tiles as you lay them. Cut the last tile as needed to fit inside the bullnose tile on the edge.
- 6). Repeat the process to lay the rest of the courses of regular tiles, building back across the surface course by course, starting each course at the center line and working out to the end. Cover the whole half counter.
- 7). Repeat the entire process for the other half of the counter, on the other side of the middle line.
- 8). Let the tile mortar dry overnight. Pull out the spacers.
- 9). Grout the tiles using your grout float, forcing the grout into the spaces while scraping it off the face. Wipe up the excess grout with a damp sponge.
