    Removing iPod Scratches Safely

    • When you are attempting to remove a scratch from your iPod, you are essentially using an abrasive to buff the scratch out, in a similar fashion to what you might do with a car. Therefore, the goal is to use a product that is abrasive enough to buff the scratch out, but not so much that you create more scratches and ruin the iPod's appearance. Toothpaste and silica-based brass polish are two popular products for this purpose.

Use a lint-free microfiber cloth, and apply a small amount of your polishing product to it. As you polish, vary your motions to prevent a haze from appearing on the surface of the iPod, and check your progress regularly. Avoid putting the polish on the iPod's click wheel, as it can cause discoloration. After you have buffed for a few minutes, wipe all of the polish off of the iPod, and see if it needs more polishing. Remember, your goal is to do the minimum amount of polishing necessary to buff the scratch out, but no more.

    Warning

    • Do not attempt to clean your iPod with harsh chemicals. Doing so may worsen any scratches that are on the unit. Attempting to buff scratches out of an iPod may void your warranty. If your unit is still covered under the original factory warranty, consider waiting until the warranty has expired before buffing a scratch; otherwise, you may not be able to have the unit replaced if it fails.
