Foods for a Luau Party
- Think fruity and tropical. For drinks at your luau, provide non-alcoholic drinks like pineapple and other fruit juices or mix it up with pineapple ginger ale. For the adults, serve mai tais, pina coladas, Blue Hawaiians and other tropical drinks.
- For the main dish at your luau, serve either chicken lu'au, which is a dish made with coconut milk and spinach; huli-huli chicken, which is a form of barbecued chicken made with a mixture of ginger, sugar cane and soy sauce; or a Kalua Pig, which is a pig that has been slow roasted over an open fire pit. The Kalua pig is the trademark of luaus.
- Fried rice is not Hawaiian, but it is a staple at most luaus. Modern Hawaii is influenced by Asian cuisine, and fried rice is extremely popular on the islands.
- Corn chowder is a Hawaiian soup that is easy to make and requires mixing chicken stock, cream of corn, onions, potatoes and pieces of chicken into a large pot.
- Fruit made the island of Hawaii famous, and it should be a staple at any Hawaiian luau. Keep the table full of bananas and pineapples.
- For dessert at your luau, serve "haupia," which is a traditional Hawaiian dessert made with coconuts that is like a pudding.
