Citing an Interview Using MLA Style
When it comes to citing an interview, the citation format that you will be using depends on what context it was conducted and published.
Basic Format:
PUBLISHED/BROADCAST INTERVIEW: Last Name, First Name. Interview by First Name Last Name. Publication Information. Medium.
PERSONALLY CONDUCTED INTERVIEW: Last Name, First Name. Interview Type interview. Date Interviewed.
In your MLA citation for interview, you must begin it with the name of the individual interviewed. Remember that you put in reverse form the name of the person interviewed, with a comma being situated right after the surname and a period after the given name (or middle name if given). Roman numerals and suffix such as Jr. or Sr. should be presented after jotting down the first name, preceded by a comma.
In case the interview has been published or broadcasted, if you can find a title of that interview, write it down as well after providing the name of the interviewed individual. In case the interview originated from a publication, programs, or recording, provide the title, along with a period, in quotation marks. In an instance that it was independently published, italicize it and end it with a period.
Example:
Jolina, Angelina. "Being a Mother." 60 Minutes. CBS. WCBS, New York: 3 Feb. 2009. Television.
If no title was provided, utilize the word €interview€ as a substitute for the title and do not italicize or utilize quotation marks. In case the interviewer's name was revealed, jot it down as well, preceded by "with", after the word "Interview". Remember that in this part it is not necessary to put in reverse form the interviewer's name.
Example:
Jolina, Angelina. Interview. 60 Minutes. CBS. WCBS, New York: 3 Feb. 2009. Television.
Jolina, Angelina. Interview by Steve Kroft. 60 Minutes. CBS. WCBS, New York: 3 Feb. 2009. Television.
End you MLA citation with the publication details associated to the medium in which the interview was published, and indicate the medium as well. Review the Citation Guide entries for these works (e.g. radio/TV programs, magazines, newspapers, books) for specific guidelines. When it comes to books, one must be aware that there are minor modifications to the publication information formatting. The name of the authors must not be formatted in a reverse order, should be preceded by the word "By", and must come right after the book title. You must consider an interview appearing in a book like a chapter and obtain the page numbers where it is appearing as well.
Example:
Jolina, Angelina. Interview by Steve Kroft. 60 Minutes. CBS. WCBS, New York: 3 Feb. 2009. Television.
Jolina, Angelina. Interview by John Smith. Newsweek 3 Feb. 2009: B22+. Print.
Jolina, Angelina. Interview by John Smith. Discussions with a Star. By Jane Doe. Pittsburgh: BibMe, 2009. 28-47. Print.
When it comes to an interview conducted personally, after the interviewed individual, present what sort of interview you have performed e.g. personal, phone, email), followed by the word "interview" and a period. End the MLA citation by the date when the interview was done, followed by a period.
Example:
Jolina, Angelina. Phone interview. 11 Feb. 2009.
