While many people do not recognize the word 'mizuhiki', most would have seen products or decorations made from it.
It is a traditional cord made of tightly twisted paper.
They are formed into long strands, usually measuring just a few millimeters in diameter.
Today, there is a wide range of colours and coatings to give a different look.
For example, mizuhiki strands have a plain paper base that is then covered with a layer of colorful or textured paper for a different effect.
It is now possible to find painted, fabric covered, or even silver and gold leaf finishes.
With a set of inexpensive cords and a few basic knots, you can create some of the most beautiful decorations for any special event.
Recently popular among modern wedding parties, the key to using mizuhiki is to use complimentary colours and combining them with other decorative items, such as Japanese chiyogami paper, beads, faux flowers or other elements that you would like to use.
Play around to see what works best with your decor or theme.
Even though you may not have used Mizuhiki before, try different techniques and start off simple.
As one example, try taking three to four cords and make a small loop with the ends sticking out.
You don't have to tie a knot or do anything g fancy, just a loop.
Where the ends cross, secure the loop with a piece of fabric, a decorative piece of paper, clear tape or even a twist tie.
Leave the ends sticking out, but cut the tips on an angle, so that one end is longer than the next.
This will give a nice angular finish on the ends.
Finally, if you used tape or a twist tie to secure the loop, cover it up by securing a faux flower, small origami model, mini ornament or anything else you may have in hand.
This way, the loop will highlight the item you secured to it.
Very simple yet beautiful, the loop is the best base for any Mizuhiki project.
It can now be used as hanging decoration, attached to cards, gifts and stationery, turned into fun jewelry or pinned to a scarf or clipped into fun hairstyle.
The uses are endless, so get a pack and play around with it to experience it yourself.
