Shabby Chic Movement & Window Styles
- Sash windows are made of one or more movable, glazed panels. The panels hold panes of glass that are separated from other panes by thin muntins. Sash windows open by sliding vertically or horizontally. They are often associated with Victorian and Georgian style homes, and they are preserved and restored when possible. The windows have an old world and romantic look, making a good accompaniment to shabby chic style homes.
- Sheer, feminine curtains add to the shabby chic style. Choose curtains with simple details, such as scalloped ruching along the bottom or delicate embroidery along the edges. Tie the curtains back with simple, nondistracting ties or muted, smooth ribbons. Hang curtains in a light color, such as white or a pale pastel.
- If shades are used, choose a romantic style. Fabric balloon shades with a scalloped bottom fit nicely into the shabby chic style. Choose a light-colored fabric, such as white. Light bamboo or woven shades can also be used, especially if there are other items in the room to tie them in, such as a light bamboo plant holder. A shabby chic alternative to shades is window shutters. Paint them white or cream, and lightly distress the surface. Install them to fit over the entire window or only the bottom half.
- If the windows open to attractive views, do not block them. Allow for the sight of an ocean view or attractive landscape scene. Shabby chic design is similar to minimalist design and invites in the beauty of the outdoors.
- When there is not an attractive view outside the window, install a window planter box. Fill the planter boxes with an abundance of flowers. Take proper care of the plants, and remove dead stems when needed. Prune off wilted blooms. Use silk flowers in pale pastel colors for year-round color.
