How to Get Rid of Acne Hyperpigmentation

    • 1). Exfoliate your face to get rid of any dead cells. Use your favorite scrub, preferably one with beads. Take note of any dark spots and determine if they constitute acne hyperpigmentation.

    • 2). Look for smooth spots, generally dark and of different sizes. Take note of indentations on the skin to differentiate between scars and acne hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs toward the surface of the skin, while scars affect multiple skin layers.

    • 3). Apply an over-the-counter skin lightening treatment with hydroquinone, which reduces melanin production and lightens the affected area. Other ingredients normally found in skin lightening creams are hydroxyl acids, tazarotene and tretinoin. Vitamin A and vitamin C, both essential for skin health, are also important, as well as glucosamine to reduce inflammation.

    • 4). Consider lemon juice if you want a natural approach. Besides lightening the skin, lemon juice contains natural antiseptic properties. It can destroy acne-causing bacteria before an acne breakout and reduce future risk of hyperpigmentation. Use a cotton ball to apply pure, fresh lemon juice to the affected area. You may apply the treatment regularly. Always follow the treatment with a moisturizer to prevent dryness.

    • 5). Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15, but higher is better. Sunscreen prevents further darkening of the affected areas.
