How to Replace a Door Sweep
- 1). Measure the width of the door at the bottom with a tape measure. Center these measurements onto a new door sweep, so you can cut off the overhang on each side. Doing this allows the farthest mounting holes on the sweep to be used, which will keep the ends of the new door sweep firmly anchored in place.
- 2). Slide the rubber strip out of the way, and use a hacksaw to cut through the metal frame at the measurement marks.
- 3). Position the rubber strip at one end and make sure the rubber edge is flush with the metal edge. Then use your scissors to cut the excess rubber flush with the opposite end.
- 4). File off the ends to make them smooth and to remove all burrs and sharp edges.
- 5). Place the flat side of the sweep up against the door bottom, and mark the screw holes with a pen. Center these marks as close as possible, because the mounting holes will be slightly elongated to allow for up and down adjustments later on. Allow gravity to rest the rubber strip against the floor, and make the markings in the screw holes.
- 6). Screw self-threading screws into the mounting holes, beginning at the middle and working your way toward each end. Screw in the screws only halfway to allow for adjustment.
- 7). Adjust the door sweep once the screws have been screwed partially in. Press slightly down on the sweep to make a good seal, then screw the screws in the rest of the way. Test the door to make sure it opens and closes without a hitch, and if there is any hang-up along the sweep, unscrew any problem screws and make adjustments.
