• Arrange a huge party in an unusual place, for instance on a barge or in a castle. If funds don't permit, have a garden party in a marquee. Keep it as a complete surprise and have all your sister's friends and family waiting to welcome her.

• Order a helicopter, hot air balloon or glider ride. These are all exciting pursuits and thrilling to do. She might like to jet or water ski. She may even want to try a quad bike. Your sister may have always wanted to do something like this but either couldn't afford it or was a little bit frightened. Make sure someone will be going with her.
  
  

Tailored Dress

• Arrange for an exclusive designer dress to be made for your sister. This does not have to be too expensive as you could use a trainee student who would welcome the opportunity to practice. Tell your sister in advance about this gift as the designer will need to take her measurements. The dress could be for her birthday party and future special occasions.
  
  

Beauty Treatment

• Book a luxury beauty treatment to lift your sister's face and her spirits in a spa or health clinic. Go with her or get her best friend or someone close to go too. You can now have makeovers and photo shoots at a spa, which would be another boost for your sister's 60th birthday.
  
  

Perfume

• Ask a perfumer to make a special perfume just for her. For this you will need to know her favorite scents, but this one will be exclusive rather than something bought from behind the counter. Give it a special name just for your sister. Alternatively, create your own perfume -- there are a few companies that offer this service.
  
  

Lessons

• Buy your sister some lessons for a subject she is interested in. Learning a new language or trying a new sport, whatever she has said she would like to learn but just never got round to. Going to classes means she might make new friends and open up a whole new social life.
