Letter Memory Games
- Show your group an overhead or chart featuring upper case letters alongside the lower case version of each letter. Create a series of cards with upper case letters and a set with lower case letters. Turn the cards face down on a table. Have your group create pairs by matching the upper case letter with its correct lower case form.
- Make 26 cards, each with one letter of the alphabet displayed. On a table, lay out the cards in the correct alphabetical order so that the children can see it. Mix the cards up and have each student try to rearrange them into the proper order. As a variation, time the students to see how quickly they can find the right order. You might even have several sets of cards and let students race against each other.
- Create a series of 26 picture cards that feature pictures that start with each letter of the alphabet. Examples include an ant, ball and candy for A, B and C, respectively. Create another 26 cards with the letters on them. Then, face all the cards down and have the students take turns trying to pair the picture with the correct letter.
- Review a worksheet or overhead with your students that covers the letters of the alphabet. Create a recording that says each letter of the alphabet clearly. Make sure there is a pause of several seconds between each letter to give students time to think and write. On a piece of notebook paper, have students write the letter that is said on the recording. To make the game more challenging, you could say the letters out of order on the recording to test their memories or have the students write the upper and lower case version of each letter.
