We're coloring rice red for a festive way to decorate for Valentine's Day! This red rice can be used and created with so many things to celebrate Valentines. Here's how to make this fun colored rice!

Supplies for Coloring Rice:
  • dry white rice – any kind
  • rubbing alcohol – this helps rice dry faster
  • green food coloring
  • plastic zip baggie
  • paper towels
  • tray

Instructions for Coloring Rice:

1. Place 2-3 cups of dry rice in a plastic zip baggie

2. Pour in 3-4 drops of your green food coloring

3. Pour in 1 Tablespoon of Rubbing Alcohol.

4. seal the bag and shake it all together. Make sure each piece of rice gets coated.

5. Pour your colored rice onto a tray lined with paper towels to dry.

NOTE: Food coloring can stain, so be careful. You’ll want it completely dry before you start to work with it again, as you don’t want any color to drip. After 20 or so minutes, give it a stir with a spoon. It should be dry within an hour.

3 ways to use your new colored red rice at home:
  • You can pour it into a large plastic bucket or bowl and add a few other red toys. Kids can play with their hands and use this as a sensory bucket as they search for the different items hidden inside the red rice.
  • Add your red rice to a clear vase for a bouquet of fake roses! This is a fun display you can place on your table or on a shelf to decorate.
  • Add a little red rice to an envelope to give out for a Valentine along with your card. The rice can act as a type of confetti for your Valentine!
