If your scores fall within or above the ranges above, you're in a good position for admission. If your scores are a little below the bottom number, don't give up hope -- a quarter of enrolled students have scores below those listed.

Be sure to keep the ACT in perspective. A strong academic record with challenging courses will carry more weight than standardized test scores. Also, some of the schools will look at qualitative measures and want to see a winning essay, meaningful extracurricular activities and good letters of recommendation.

Note that the ACT is far more popular than the SAT in South Dakota, but all the schools will accept either exam.
