Weaving Projects for School
- Basket weaving is one of the potential lessons in weaving a teacher might employ. This is ideally taught as a craft for classes like history or social studies when looking at cultures that made baskets. Show the students the basics of making a woven basket, starting with the over and under base and building up from the base to weave basket materials in and out. Students should focus on making small baskets rather than large ones to prevent boredom.
- Woven keychains are a simple finger weaving lesson where students can learn the basics of weaving, which is an in and out measure to create a small and useful item: a keychain. The project requires flat cord and a metal ring. Three yards of the cord are used with two different colors. The top is looped around the metal ring and then the now four strings are adjusted so they form a cross with the same color facing opposite directions. Fold the two cords of one color to make two loops, then weave one of the other colors over and under. Repeat on the opposite side. Continue in the same method for four inches. This is an ideal craft for lessons in making friends, for gift ideas or for holiday crafts.
- For a project relating to history, a woven bag is an appropriate project. It requires a piece of cardboard, such as a 4-by-5-inch rectangle, scissors and thread. Notches are made into the top about ¼ of an inch apart. A small notch is made into the bottom of the far right as well. Take a thread and put it into the first notch on the left. Draw it down the front, wrap it around the bottom and come around, putting it next into the second notch. Repeat across the board and at the end, hold it in place with the thread in the right corner. Take a different colored thread, start at the bottom right edge and begin an over and under pattern in the yarn on the cardboard. Leave extra thread outside the yarn. Press down on the yarn to keep it tight and work around the front and back. To change colors, go back and weave a few extra and repeat the process. At the top of the cardboard, the weaving is done. Remove the threads from the notches, weave any loose threads into the bag and turn the bag inside out.
- As an art project and to promote friendships in school, students can make a friendship bracelet through weaving. The bracelet takes four pieces of different colored embroidery floss and ties it into a knot at the top. The first string is taken and looped around the second while holding the second straight. Pull it tight and repeat on the second string. Repeat for the third and fourth string to form double knots on both. Take the second string and repeat the process from the third string to the first string. Repeat until it is as long as preferred. Tie off the end and trim the edges.
