How to Cut a French Terry Drawstring to Length
- 1). Put on the French terry drawstring garment and tie the drawstring as you normally would when you wear the garment. Put on the shoes you normally wear with the garment.
- 2). Hold the yardstick so the end with the 1-inch mark is against the floor with the numbers going up.
- 3). Have your helper make a mark 1/2 inch below the desired length. If you are working alone, you will have to bend over, mark the spot and stand back up to confirm that the mark is in the right spot. Turn slowly, marking a spot the same distance from the floor every 3 inches.
- 4). Remove the garment. Place the edge of the yardstick against the marked spots. Draw in the rest of the cutting line by connecting the dots.
- 5). Cut off the excess fabric using the scissors and cutting right on the line.
- 6). Finish the raw edge by sewing a line of zigzag or over-lock stitches along the cut edge of the French terry garment. Set the sewing machine to make a long, straight stitch. Fold the finished edge under 1/2 inch, and make a hem by sewing all the way around, 3/8 inch from the bottom.
- 1). Put on the garment and tie the drawstring as you normally would.
- 2). Measure the drawstring ends, leaving 6 inches of loose drawstring beyond the knot. Mark the spots with the tailor's chalk or fabric marking pen.
- 3). Remove the garment. Cut the drawstring end on the spots you marked, using the scissors.
- 4). Set the sewing machine to make a very tight, thin zigzag stitch. Sew back and forth across the ends two or three times to make sure the drawstring will not fray.
